Stanley Ka Dabba: A Heartwarming Tale of Friendship and Food
Stanley Ka Dabba is a 2011 Hindi film written, directed and produced by Amole Gupte, starring Divya Dutta, Partho Gupte (son of Amol Gupte), Divya Jagdale, Raj Zutshi, and Amole Gupte. The film was released on May 13, 2011 and received critical acclaim for its touching story, realistic performances, and social message.
The film revolves around Stanley (Partho Gupte), a fourth grader at Holy Family school in Mumbai, who is very popular among his friends. He is talented and well liked by his peers. The English teacher, Ms. Rosy (Divya Dutta), is particularly impressed with his creativity, wit, and humor. Stanley is shown with a bruised face in the opening scene of the movie. On being questioned about it by Ms. Rosy, he concocts an elaborate story, much to her amusement. His humorous essays and offhand poem recitations make him her favorite in class.
However, Stanley has a secret: he doesn't bring his lunch box or 'dabba' to school, unlike all his other classmates. He makes up excuses to avoid eating with his friends during lunch break. The reason for this is revealed later in the film: Stanley is an orphan who lives with an abusive uncle who doesn't feed him properly. Stanley survives on scraps and leftovers from restaurants and street vendors.
Verma (Amole Gupte), is a ravenous Hindi teacher; a phagomaniac who does not bring his own dabba either but lusts after everyone else's, also stealing food on occasion. The kids at school nickname him as 'Khadoos' (cantankerous person). He has a poor reputation among his peers for his mindless and inconsiderate gluttony. He particularly eyes the dabba of one of Stanley's friends and shamelessly joins the group in class as soon as the lunch bell goes off to gorge on their food. A lot of his class time is spent discussing what his students brought for lunch.
One day, he ends up coming late during lunch-break and misses out on eating what he had earlier hoped to eat from the children's dabbas. Upon realizing that the food in question was shared with Stanley, Khadoos berates him for not getting his own dabba. Stanley senses Khadoos' hostility towards him and avoids eating from his friends' dabbas thereafter, telling them every day during lunch break that he is going home to enjoy a hot meal prepared by his mother. His friends catch his bluff soon after when they find him loitering around the school during lunch break.
Stanley's friends decide to help him out by bringing extra food for him every day. They also confront Khadoos and tell him to stop bothering Stanley. Khadoos gets angry and bans Stanley from entering the school premises until he brings his own dabba. This leads to a series of events that expose Khadoos' true nature and reveal Stanley's tragic past.
The film ends on a positive note as Stanley's friends stand by him and support him. Ms. Rosy also comes to know about Stanley's situation and decides to adopt him as her son. She also resigns from her job at Holy Family school and takes Stanley with her to another school where he can study without any fear or hunger.
Stanley Ka Dabba is a film that celebrates the innocence and resilience of children. It also highlights the importance of food security and nutrition for every child. The film has been praised for its realistic portrayal of school life, its subtle humor, its emotional impact, and its social message.
