Ivo Tartalja was born on July 31, 1930 in Belgrade, in one of the last noble families in the Balkans. His father was the writer and poet Gvido Tartalja and his uncle was the painter Marino Tartalja. He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, where he obtained his PhD in 1961. He worked as a professor of general literature and literary theory at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Belgrade from 1955 to 1995. He also taught postgraduate courses in Belgrade, Novi Sad and PriÅ¡tina, and lectured at newly established faculties in NiÅ¡ and Kragujevac. He was involved in the founding and work of the Institute for Literature and Art (formerly the Center for Literary and Art Theory) and served as a secretary of the Board for Critical Editions at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He was also a member of several editorial boards and journals. He received several awards for his scientific and literary contributions, such as the "ÄorÄe JovanoviÄ" award, the "Mladen Leskovac" award and the Charter of Gratitude from Adligat. He died on November 3, 2020 in Belgrade.
Ivo Tartalja was a respected and beloved professor who had high standards but also a lot of understanding for his students. He was a symbol of the "old professorship", when students were expected to work hard but also received a lot of guidance and knowledge from their teachers.
