How to Calibrate Your Camera Autofocus with Reikan FoCal Pro
If you want to get the best performance out of your camera and lenses, you need to make sure they are properly calibrated. One way to do that is by using Reikan FoCal Pro, a software tool that automates the process of autofocus calibration and testing.
Reikan FoCal Pro works with most modern Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras and lenses, and it can run on both Windows and Mac operating systems. It connects to your camera via a USB cable and takes control of it, capturing test images, downloading them and analysing them for sharpness and detail in real time.
Reikan FoCal Pro can determine the best autofocus calibration value for any attached lens, as well as perform various tests and analyses to check the autofocus consistency, aperture sharpness, dust level and multipoint focus of your camera and lens. It can also generate detailed PDF reports with all the results and compare them with thousands of other users to see how your equipment behaves.
In this article, we will show you how to use Reikan FoCal Pro to calibrate your camera autofocus and improve your image quality.
What You Need
To use Reikan FoCal Pro, you will need the following:
A compatible Canon or Nikon DSLR camera with a supported lens. You can check the list of supported cameras and lenses here.
A computer running Windows or Mac OS with Reikan FoCal Pro installed. You can download the software from here.
A USB cable to connect your camera to your computer.
A tripod to mount your camera on.
A Reikan FoCal target printed on A4 or Letter size paper. You can download the target from here.
A well-lit room with a flat wall to attach the target to.
How to Set Up
Before you start calibrating your camera autofocus, you need to set up your camera, computer and target correctly. Here are the steps:
Attach the Reikan FoCal target to a flat wall with some tape or pins. Make sure it is level and not tilted or curved.
Mount your camera on a tripod and place it about 25 times the focal length of your lens away from the target. For example, if you are using a 50mm lens, place your camera about 1.25 meters (4 feet) away from the target.
Connect your camera to your computer with a USB cable and turn it on.
Launch Reikan FoCal Pro on your computer and select your camera model from the list.
Follow the instructions on the screen to adjust your camera settings, such as aperture, ISO, shutter speed, white balance, etc.
Use the live view feature on Reikan FoCal Pro to align your camera with the target. Make sure the target fills most of the frame and is in focus.
How to Calibrate
Once you have set up everything correctly, you are ready to calibrate your camera autofocus. Here are the steps:
Select the Fully Automatic Calibration option from the menu on Reikan FoCal Pro.
Choose the lens you want to calibrate from the list.
